Case Study:
Outdoor playground area for Mountain View College, Doonside.
WS Landscape Management was engaged to design and build a new outdoor playground area for Mountain View College, Doonside.
This existing school garden area was subject to erosion and water run-off due to the sloping hill landscape. The area had existing protected trees.
The overall aim of this project was to solve the soil erosion issue, control water run off during rain periods, create a safe seating space for students and teachers whilst regenerating garden areas with native plants.
This was achieved by creating a grassed sink styled area which captures water run off from a large area into a drainage network. Other drainage points were placed within the greater garden space to collect water and safely remove it.
A tiered garden space was excavated and introduced to flatten areas to create safer level areas. This was achieved through sandstone block work. Two seating areas were created for students to meet and interact during lunchtime breaks. The area can also be used as an outdoor meeting space and as well as teaching area should the need arise.
Other items of the project included additional grassed areas that were created to allow for students to play outdoor sports, crushed granite pathways were used to reinforce the natural soft nature tones and finally native plants were introduced to encourage native birds back to this garden area. A simple watering system completed this project.
Should your academic site or facility be looking to undertake the regeneration of a garden area our team would appreciate the opportunity to discuss your plans and ideas.
